The name gives it away: Gran Canaria boasts a lovely warm climate all year round. A sunny holiday destination, but shared with the welcoming locals.
Places to visit in Gran Canaria
Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria and is on the northern side of this volcanic island. Because of the trade winds and the inland mountains, it can be slightly more humid here than in the south. Most tourists prefer the south of the island, where it is drier and sunnier. The Santa Ana Cathedral in the city centre is definitely worth visiting. Eight bronze statues of dogs, a reference to the name Canary Islands (canis = dog) stand in the square in front of the cathedral. Renaissance-style buildings surround the square, which is also the style of the former town hall, Casa Consistorial. An interesting fact is that the home of Christopher Columbus is located in the district: Casa de Colón. You can visit the house and learn all about the story of this famed explorer, as well as the history of the island.
Discover Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is a great destination for those who enjoy spending time among the locals. The options are similar compared to the south. The beach (Playa de las Canteras) is just as beautiful, the port (Puerto de la Luz) just as impressive, and the abundance of restaurants and cafés just as exhilarating.
