Sun worshippers flock to Madrid during summer, snowboarders come in winter. Modern and classical art compete for attention. Bullfighting is both revered and detested. You can dance all night in trendy clubs, or just chill out at a streetside café. Madrid is a city of extremes.
Places to visit in Madrid
With over 3 million inhabitants, Madrid is the largest city in Spain. A real metropolis with a huge variety of museums, monuments and landmarks. The Palacio Real (Royal Palace) and the Retiro Park (archaeological museum) should be on every city trip's wish list. Madrid also has some of the best museums in Spain. Museo del Prado is a classical museum that exhibits the works of many Spanish artists, but you'll also come across a room dedicated to the Dutch masters. If modern art is more your thing, don't miss out on visiting the Museo Reins Sofia. Picasso is the most famous guest here, with Guernica as the masterpiece.
Discover Madrid
The Spanish ‘cocina’ has its very own interpretation in Madrid. The most typical dish is a traditional stew, or cocido madrileño. It's all about preparing the meal using fresh ingredients, preferably home grown in Spain. It goes without saying that you can get tapas just about anywhere. Madrid has an abundance of bars and clubs. But you'll also notice that a lot of the nightlife takes place outdoors. Drinking and socialising in the streets – botellón – is very popular. Supermarkets essentially serve as cheap bars.
