Places to visit in Sofia
The oldest building in the city is the Church of St George. Another popular religious sight is Boyana Church. Thanks in part to its flawless frescoes from 1259, Boyana is on UNESCO's World Heritage List. In 89 scenes, you can get a good idea of medieval eastern European painting. Sofia's most famous building is the cathedral named after Alexander Nevski. And a visit to the Banya Bashi Mosque is also an absolute must. It was built during the Ottoman rule (1576) and is now one of the oldest mosques in Europe.

Bulgarian cuisine is definitely worth trying. The dishes have influences from the Slavic, Turkish, Greek and Middle Eastern cuisines. Salads in Bulgaria are rich in flavour and served with every meal. Dairy products are also very popular, and Bulgarian yoghurt is world-famous. National dishes include Tarator, a cold soup with yoghurt and cucumbers, and Baniysa, a type of pastry. You'll find some excellent Bulgarian restaurants in Panchavero and Raiska Gradina.
