Flying to the Algarve

Are you looking for a holiday where the sun almost always shines? With more than 300 sunny days a year, the Algarve is pretty much a guarantee for a perfect beach holiday! Besides the beautiful sandy beaches, this coastal region is known for its spectacular nature reserves and characteristic towns. You definitely won't get bored here!

The coastline of the Algarve

Golden sandy beaches, secluded coves and colour-rich cliffs... The Algarve has everything you could wish for. Situated in the southernmost part of Portugal, the Algarve has a fascinating coastline that runs for 170 km. It's not only regarded by many as one of the most beautiful coastline in Europe, every beach has its own unique character as is waiting to be discovered. To give you a glimpse of the beauty that the beaches in the Algarve offer, we've highlighted two that you really shouldn't miss!

Albufeira and its magnetic attraction

The coastal city of Albufeira in Portugal's south is full of life. Originally a fishing village built against the rocks, it has grown over the years to become the most popular seaside resort in the Algarve. The fantastic climate could be the main reason for the city's appeal, but also the wide choice of tourist attractions keep holidaymakers coming for excitement and relaxation. This growing popularity says a lot about Albufeira's magnetic attraction. No wonder because there is plenty to do for young and old, making this diverse city the perfect beach holiday!

Albufeira is also a great destination for people who love to party. You'll find a huge variety of pubs and night clubs, so you can always dance the night away. Besides the buzzing nightlife with countless bars and discotheques that this seaside city is known for, there is plenty more to see and do here. The beautiful beaches, historic city centre and fun water parks also draw many people to the region. A golden tip to visit is the Praia dos Pescadores, which is regarded as Albufeira's best beach where you can relax by the sea and be in town for a bite to eat in next to no time. Its origins as a fishermen's beach have not been lost and you will find historic charm in the old town of Albufeira.

Hotspots in Carvoeiro

A picturesque small town with idyllic beaches, intimate bays with hidden caves and a charming centre with fantastic restaurants ... If you're looking for the real traditional Portuguese hospitality of the Algarve but love small scale, then head off to Carvoeiro for a day...or two!

After relaxing on the beach of Carvoeiro, you can pick up your towel and wander right into the centre of town. The Carvoeiro Boardwalk runs right along the beach, which is surrounded by high sandstone cliffs. Don't miss this chance if you're staying in the area! The man-made wooden walkways connect the centre of Carvoeiro with Algar Seco, where you'll find the most impressive rock formations. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes because, despite the wooden platforms, you'll eventually encounter a more challenging climb to reach the spectacular viewpoint. And believe us, this is a view you'll want to see!

Praia da Marinha

Praia da Marinha is considered by many as the ultimate beach in the Algarve. Located near Lagoa, this beach features unique rock formations and colourful cliffs that are typical for the southern beaches. But Praia da Marinha is just a little bit more special than the others. Perhaps it's the magnificent panoramic views from the beach that make the difference.

Discover the highlights of the Algarve

The Algarve is the most popular tourist region of Portugal, but what are the highlights you simply shouldn't miss? Apart from the beautiful long coastline, the hinterland of the Algarve also has plenty to offer. The overwhelming natural scenery, historic small towns and lively nightlife, it's an experience you'll definitely remember! Pay a visit to Serra de Monchique, for example, which is situated in the westernmost region of the Algarve. Here you'll find Foia mountain that rises up to 902 metres. Climb all the way to the top and explore the pristine nature along the way. If the fog stays away, you'll be rewarded with magnificent views! Make sure you have a warm jumper with you though, as it can be quite a bit cooler at the top than down below!

If climbing isn't your thing, you can always learn more about the rich history of the Algarve in Parque da Mina. Parque da Mina is an intimate cultural park that features a former mine, a small waterfall, an 18th-century decorated house and a farmhouse. A guide will take you on a tour through the park and you can go on a journey of discovery through the past. Looking for something else?
