1 in 3 passengers at Eindhoven Airport is visiting family

Eindhoven Airport plays an important role in connecting people in the region. Every day, the airport welcomes an average of over eighteen thousand arriving and departing passengers. What are their travel motives and what stands out?

In 2023, Eindhoven Airport welcomed approximately 6.8 million passengers (both departing and arriving). The airport expects a similar number this year.

Traveler Monitor

Eindhoven Airport conducts surveys among departing passengers during periods in the spring and autumn (outside school holidays): the Traveler Monitor. In 2023, over 5000 respondents were surveyed. The Traveler Monitor 2023 shows that 53 percent travel for vacation/city trips, 14 percent for work-related reasons, and 33 percent to visit family or friends.

Popular vacation and city trips

Eindhoven Airport is often the starting point for passengers going on vacation or city trips. Malaga and Alicante, for example, are popular destinations for departing passengers going on vacation. Additionally, Eindhoven is regularly the starting point for city trips to places like Valencia or Budapest.

Business travel motives

Passengers also frequently use Eindhoven Airport as a departure or arrival airport for business trips. Fourteen percent travel for work-related reasons. Many labor migrants from, for example, Eastern Europe who work in the Brainport region travel via Eindhoven Airport. Additionally, London is a popular destination among departing passengers with a business travel motive.

Visiting Friends or Relatives

A third common travel motive (for 33 percent of travelers) is visiting friends or relatives. Eindhoven Airport is often the arrival point for family members and friends of internationals living and working in the Eindhoven region. Additionally, the airport serves as a departure point for travelers from Eastern Europe living and working in the Eindhoven region who are visiting family and friends in their home countries.

Role of Eindhoven Airport in internationalization

Of the 33 percent of departing passengers traveling to visit family or friends, nearly half (45 percent) come from abroad. This can be explained by the strong internationalization of Brainport Eindhoven, where more internationals than ever are working and living.

Currently, around 8500 internationals work in Brainport Eindhoven, and this number is expected to increase further. For them, Eindhoven Airport contributes to the living environment, as the presence of the airport close to home makes it easy to visit family and friends abroad.
