Expansion of Eindhoven Airport terminal reaches highest point
Today, the highest point of the expansion of Eindhoven Airport’s terminal was officially reached with the placement of a wooden roof beam by construction supervisor Ruud Hendriks of Eindhoven Airport and site manager Perry van der Wijst of Heijmans.
At its highest point, the terminal is approximately 14 metres tall. A total of 735 cubic metres of timber has been used in the roof, which consists of 687 individual components.
The terminal expansion is the largest construction project in the history of the airport. In total, the terminal will be enlarged by 12,000 square metres. The expansion incorporates several sustainability features. For example, it includes a water buffer that collects rainwater for flushing the toilets in the new terminal area. Approximately 1,100 solar panels will be installed on the roof. Once the expansion is completed, the total number of solar panels on the roofs of Eindhoven Airport will exceed 3,000.
Roel Hellemons, CEO of Eindhoven Airport, said: “Reaching the highest point is an important milestone for Eindhoven Airport, the airport of the Brainport region. The expansion will soon offer our passengers significantly more space and comfort.” The expansion aligns with the airport’s ambition to continue safeguarding the quality of the airport in line with the needs of passengers, visitors and employees.
Ton Hillen, CEO of Heijmans, added: “There is no doubt that work is being carried out here on a future-proof airport. It is good to see that construction is on schedule. This is a project where the proverbial shop remains open: construction continues while passengers are still able to travel via Eindhoven Airport. It proves that the two can go hand in hand.”
The terminal will be expanded by 2,000 square metres before the security screening area. After security, an additional 10,000 square metres will be added. There will be more space for services and facilities, and a baggage basement will be constructed, allowing the handling agent to drive baggage tractors directly from the apron into the baggage area.
Eindhoven Airport is proud of the progress made in the construction process and is keen to share this with interested parties. During Neighbours’ Day on Saturday 28 February, which Eindhoven Airport is organising together with Heijmans, visitors will be able to view the progress during a guided tour of the construction site.
The current terminal covers approximately 26,000 square metres. The terminal is being expanded because it has become too small for the current number of passengers, which is around 7 million per year. The existing terminal was designed to handle 5 million passengers annually. Completion of the expansion is scheduled for July 2027.
